What fits your work?
Two columns can hold connected passages and worked examples. Three columns can keep short observations, definitions or comparisons close together. Neither layout requires a fixed role for every column.
The A5 journal inserts keep a smaller working collection portable. US Letter provides a larger sheet for developing a topic. Choose either for the work it needs to hold; neither requires adopting a complete method.
From a page to a reference.
